On Taking Medicine Pills

Maybe because of its taste or my inability to swallow a pill, I have grown this fear of taking medicine whenever I get sick.

I grew up not taking any vitamin pill. The only vitamin I knew was Tikitiki. I had this when I was a baby, mother said. My sisters younger than me had too. Even my niece and nephews. But Tikitiki is a a syrup. No effort to swallow. It immediately flows down in your throat. But to take pills? That was a big battle then between my mother and I. Read more>>>

What Extreme Dieting Can do

It is on the news. Hollywood actor Christian Bale reportedly lost 60 lbs just for his role in the movie, The Machinist, in 2004. He was on a strict diet of apple and tuna a day. I wonder if it means he consumed only tuna and apple in a day or in every meal?

Based on Caloriecounter.com, a medium-sized apple has 72 calories while a cup of solid or chunk tuna has 139 calories only. Given this, I guess he consumed the duo in every meal. ..

Hence he was under a 600-calorie diet when he lost that big amount of weight. It was just a guess.

According to his interview, he was more calm when he lost weight but he does not recommend to other to do it. And he's not doing it again to lose weight for this next movie.

I think 600-calorie diet is too much. How about 800-calorie diet?

A night of good things!

The year 2010 will soon be over. It may be too early, but I think it is best to bid good bye to the soon-to-go year with gratitude. The year brought more of good things than bad things to me. And I feel blessed and I am thankful!

I saw new faces. I met new friends.  I've been to different places. And most of all, this year has witnessed the two pivotal decisions I made in my life!

So to avoid the rush come New Year and in the celebration of Thanksgiving, I invited few friends to come over for dinner. I love to cook for family and friends. Though this time, I tried to prepare something different from what I have been doing for the past years. Read more>>>

Is Scarsdale Diet the answer?

I saw copies of  the pictures taken the other night. I suddenly felt depressed and anxious. Certainly I am on my heaviest weight and biggest frame at the moment.  There is no room to procrastinate! It is time that I should do something about this.

I searched for possible diet to do. I stumbled upon Scarsdale Diet. Then I searched in Youtube for videos to download on Taebo. I know these cannot do miracles overnight. But I hope in the next two weeks that I am going to do regimen, I will lose some unwanted weight and be inspired to move on.

Batibot After Two Decades (?)

Good news. Bad news.
Good news. Batibot is coming back!!! Whew! After two decades(?), Batibot will return to serve as another modern-day babysitter’s tool. Kids love to watch TV and see animals talking, singing, and dancing with humans. Great! I am excited about this. I remember that days when Ate Sienna and Kuya Bodjie will tell stories, teach kids how to count, how to say “po” and “opo”, and a lot more!
I remember that Batibot was a paper of two of my classmates in college. They worked together on the topic. I joined them once to visit the set. I saw Manang Bola, Luningning, Baningning, and Ate Sienna. I was not able to see Pong Pagong ang Kiko Matsing. And I will not be able to see more of them when Batibot returns to TV.

And that is the bad news! The new version of Batibot will not have my favorite turtle and monkey. This is due to the licensing issue between Philippine Children Television and Sesame Workshop.
One more thing that I will miss about the old Batibot is the great man behind it. The great Rene Villanueva.
Still, I am very happy that the kids today will be able to watch a show that a lot of young adults today enjoyed to watch during their early years.
Are you going to watch the new Batibot? Huwag tutulog-tulog, sabihin agad sa akin ang sagot. ba-be-bi-bo-bu! :p

they eat more but weigh lesser

Yahoo.com reported it and it is all over the internet pages.

Michael Phelps has been the talk of the Olympic town after bagging 8 golds in various swimming categories in this year's Summer Olympics. Another reason to talk about him is his 12,000-calorie daily intake. I think it is not all about his 30-hour weekly training that let him stay fit. He has good metabolism. He is lucky!!!

Imagine eating 3 fried egg sandwiches, 5-egg omelet, 1 pound pasta and more... then drinking an energy drink (1000) calories to bring all this intake down! He is so lucky!

this reminds me of my classmates in college. we ate together during lunchtime. she would eat 2 cups of rice with viands then after few minutes she will eat an order of cheese burger. Yet, it is not visible in any part of her body. Life is unfair!

Back to Walking!

Now that I stay at home most of the time, I want to go back to walking. I badly need one since I am on a sedentary lifestyle. So Week 1 starts tomorrow, October 16 with a follow up on October 19. Blood Chem is scheduled on Monday.  I also need to replace the battery of my pedometer.

On Eating Fruits

An email from a friend...

EATING FRUIT...
It's long but very informative
We all think eating fruits means just buying fruits, cutting it and just popping it into our mouths. It's not as easy as you think. It's important to know how and when to eat.
What is the correct way of eating fruits?

IT MEANS NOT EATING FRUITS AFTER YOUR MEALS! * FRUITS SHOULD BE EATEN ON AN EMPTY STOMACH.
If you eat fruit like that, it will play a major role to detoxify your system, supplying you with a great deal of energy for weight loss and other life activities.
FRUIT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT FOOD. Let's say you eat two slices of bread and then a slice of fruit. The slice of fruit is ready to go straight through the stomach into the intestines, but it is prevented from doing so.
In the meantime the whole meal rots and ferments and turns to acid. The minute the fruit comes into contact with the food in the stomach and digestive juices, the entire mass of food begins to spoil....

The General Motors Diet

Based on Google search...

The General Motors Diet targets a weight loss of 7-10 lbs in seven days. It also helps in flushing and cleaning out toxins.

The General Motors Weight Loss Diet was developed for the employees of the firm. However, the diet proved so useful that the world cannot stop listing its benefits. Along with being a perfect recipe for a fast weight loss, it also helps detoxify and cleanse the system.
According to the diet, you must completely abstain from drinking alcohol. You should ideally take 10-15 glasses of water everyday as it helps flush out the toxins from your body. You can consume the following beverages – water flavored with lemon, club soda, black coffee – no cream, no substitutes and no sugar.

Important: No fruit juices before Day Seven.

Day One

Eat as many fruits as you want. No bananas though. If watermelon or cantaloupe is available, take huge quantities of it. Watermelon will enable you to lose 3-4 lbs on the first day. Day One would prepare the system for the week to come.

Day Two

Eat all vegetables – raw or cooked – of your choice in any quantity. A cooked vegetable does not mean vegetables made in curry or with spices. You can make food palatable by adding a dollop of butter or some salad dressing to it. This is taken for energy and balance. You can start the day by eating a baked potato but the rest of the vegetables consumed during the day should be calorie free and rich in nutrition and fiber.

You can also try sautéed vegetables. Boil the vegetables of your choice, once they are boiled drain the water out of them, lightly sauté them in a teaspoon of butter, add a little salt and you are done.

Day Three

A mixture of fruits and vegetables – all the salad that you can eat day! No bananas and no potatoes. Day Three prepares the system to start burning excess pounds.

Day Four

Eat up to 8 bananas and drink 3 glasses of milk. Day Four makes up for the lost potassium and sodium.

Day Five

Take small portions of lean meat or cottage cheese with 6 whole tomatoes. You can make a sandwich out of it. Increase your water intake by 1/4th. The meat / cheese are for iron and proteins and the tomatoes are for digestion and fiber. The excess water purifies the system.

Day Six

Eat unlimited amounts of lean meat (fish / chicken) or cottage cheese and vegetables.

Day Seven

Eat brown rice, fruit juices and all the vegetables you can possibly stuff! On this day, you will feel 7-10 lbs lighter from all the rinsing and flushing. Do not use white rice – use pulses for a protein substitute.

If this diet works for you, please follow it only once a month and not more than that. Eat enough when on this diet to avoid fatigue, tiredness and emotional distress. Do not curb your hunger!

painful losing

i planned to lose 10 lbs last month. but I tell you i think i gained weight in trying to lose that much. i was such a bum.. a loafer.. a couch potato.

last saturday morning, my friend accompanied me to the laboratory where his sister is working as a medical technologist. he persuaded me to have my blood tested. yup, everything is normal expept for my uric acid level. it is slightly higher than the normal value. psychological perhaps, last night i felt the pain in my feet. they were not that painful before. well perhaps, the culprit were my slippers. i walked to and from my way to work. at least i tried to skip two short rides so that i can have a little exercise. if i would continue on this walking thing, i must buy a new pait of walking-friendly slippers. something with cushion that will not trigger the pain in my feet.

what is the best way to avoid eating rice? i think i am carbohydrate addict. no matter how much i avoid to eat rice or bread, still my addiction gets me to eat. argh! i love to think.. to plan.. but i lack the drive to put my plans to realization. see! i am evaluating myself before anybody does. let me do the work.

being big is painful.. emotionally and physically. and i am letting this happen to me. maybe hi-calcium milk can help me. no-rice diet can also help me... all-fruits diet can also help me.. but how can i help myself?

Power 12 Foods: Never Go Hungry

I stumble upon an article on the Net - The Power 12 Foods: Never Go Hungry.

After reading the article, I evaluated my eating habit and came to a realization why I kept on gaining instead of losing. I have been eating the wrong food. Few weeks ago, I bought some packs of oatmeal, But these are the prepared ones - yeah, the flavored ones.. I love the banana, cinnamon, and strawberry flavor actually. I have been accustomed to reading the labels. One ingredient that I have been avoiding is the aspartame. Research shows that it has some bad effects to bones. But yet, I have sweet tooth so I still prefer the flavored oatmeal. And now I am thinking for some alternative to jazz up my unflavored, unsweetened oatmeal.

alternative to rice

I found my alternative to rice! good news, aight?!

I would like to thank those from Pex who really made relevant comments on the food calorie intake I listed. Looking at it, yeah I agree that it may harm me eventually.

After realization, I will try the following:
- avoid rice, fats, sweets.

- no to fried foods (of any kind)
- no to chocolates and juices

So for this week:
- to replace rice, i am having oatmeal for breakfast. Sticky oatmeal to replace rice.. hehehe.. syempre may ulam pa rin.
- no more fruit juices in my grocery list. drink more water. i bought 1.2 tumbler and i will use it to have 2 1.2-liter of water a day as a start.
- more greens!!! i bought three packs for my salad and greens in my sandwiches.
- sandwich for lunch
- nuts for snacks
- cereal drinks as alternative snacks..

To do:

i walk to lose!

Remember my pedometer? I got it to be able to track down my number of steps in a day. Based on my readings so far, to be able to lose 1000 calories a day, i have to make 10,000 steps. and based on my step performance, i haven't done it yet.

blame it on my sedentary lifestyle brought about by my work. i have to be in front of PC most of the time. and when i get the time to walk, i am almost tired to do it.

so what must i do?

i found a solution which i have been tying and i must say that i am still in a trial stage. i walk when i have the opportunity. for example, instead of taking a trike, i walk. instead of taking a jeep, i walk. instead of getting a lift, i walk.

today, my pedo dido reads: more than 6,000 steps. thanks to my grocery sked. walking around the supermarket helped me reach this far.

...the undisciplined dieter me...

yes, still no success with my quest to lose even an inch of my size... blame it to food, to work, to schedule.. to me.. yes. to the undisciplined me.

i have been big or horizontally challenged since birth. and until now i am big... hehehe.. well back in 2001, i was able to get rid 30 pounds from my weight then. that was within three months. what did i do? less food intake and walkathon. as in walkathon.

instead of riding a tricycle, i walked. instead of riding another jeepney, i walked. that was my usual activity then. going to and from work was a two-tricycle ride and two jeepney rides. so in the morning, i skipped one tricycle ride. on my way from work. i skipped two-tricycle ride and one-jeepney ride. i am not sure how many minutes did it take but i tell you walking contributed a lot to my weight loss then. plus of course the fact that i ate less as in i tried calorie counting, no rice and cola for me. but of course i never deprived myself of ice cream. one scoop was enough for me.

now i am thinking, if i was able to do it then, why is it a big deal for me now to do it again? is it the lazy me? is it the stubborn me? or it is the tired-at-the-end-of-the-day me? maybe the latter... my work is not into much of physical thing but it tires me out to think and to think...

i hope i can re-do this again... i hope and i wish..

Happy 1st Birthday to you.. Again!

Few days from now, you ‘ll turn one.. again.
It has been a year and as what you promised to yourself, you’ll never waste the second chance to live. I remember exactly one year ago when you were complaining about the pain. You thought it was the regular pain that Kremil S or Ranitide can cure. But you were wrong. You took the next level and asked for pain killer the next time you had an attack.
But it was just temporary. The hard-headed you went to your doctor for an advice. Fortunately, she’s more hard-headed than you are and didn’t take “No” for an answer. She sensed something was terribly wrong with you that she admittedly you immediately.
She was right. That same night, your first night at the hospital, you had an attack. It was the most painful of all attacks that you had. You were given  a pain killer but after three hours, there was pain again. Then another shot of different kind, but after three hours, the pain was radiating. You were then given two shots – a pain killer and a shot to put you into sleep so you won’t  feel pain in case the effects of the pain killer wears off.
You had high fever. The infection already set in your body system. After two days, you were subjected to an open surgery that lasted for three hours. Three hours after that, you found yourself in the recuperating table. Then another hour, you found yourself in a room where you spent the next seven days of your stay in the hospital.
“Muntik ka nang mamatay,” your sister told you.  ”Buti na lang nagpa-admit ka na. Kung hindi, baka hindi ka narito ngayon. Sa iba ka nakahiga.”

You were shocked to learn the news. The operation took more than the usual or normal procedure time.  Your doctor was tensed and feared to commit any mistake. Supposedly, it was just a normal procedure for her, but your case was different. Thanks to her. She was good to keep you alive.
A year after, here you are. Trying to realize what you promised yourself to do. You committed to redirect your life. You gave yourself a year to see if there will be changes with your routine, with the stressors around you. Nothing has changed. But you want change. And you are making some changes in your life.
Happy birthday to you. It has been another year and I am looking forward to another year and year and year of changes in your life.

To drink or not to drink cola...

I have been avoiding to drink cola. Not only because of weight issues, but also of sugar issues. Even if it is sugar-free, still I believe it's sugar content can kill me. This is a big issue to me if water is not around. I have no choice but to have cola or coffee.

But this article from Yahoo gave me another reason why we should avoid drinking too much cola.

Too Much Cola Can Cause Muscle Problems
- WEDNESDAY, May 27 (HealthDay News) -- Drinking too much cola can increase the risk of a muscle problem called hypokalemia, experts warn. In people with hypokalemia, a drop in blood potassium levels results in problems with vital muscle functions. Symptoms can range from mild weakness to serious paralysis, say Greek researchers who conducted a review of people who drank between two to nine liters of cola a day.

Taking pills this time!

I have heard several information about it so I am trying it myself this time. Let me try it for one week, then let me see the results. I do not find it as an extra expense for me since the money I save with my walking can be used to buy Fitrum. I will take two-three capsules a day to partner my walking. Some said that it will not take effect unless you move more. So I took two caps today and my usual Fern C as my Vitamin C source. I will give you updates after a week. Well, Fitrum is less expensive than Xando or Xenical.

I really need to concentrate on walking. One of these days, I want to see 10,000 or more figures in my list!
Touch work ahead!

oatmeal oatmeal oatmeal

I woke up early today because I need to early for my class since I was assigned to present my topic today. Actually earlier than what I intended to because i needed to prepare my breakfast - oatmeal and a can of tuna. I cooked the oatmeal as a replacement to my rice and had the tuna as my viand.

I have been into this "diet" since Tuesday. I have been eating coked oatmeal with my ulam. I eat it plain. No sugar. No milk. Fortunately, I am liking it.

I must admit that I am not to serious with my diet since I still eat regular food or food I have used to eat but in moderate portions.

What I noticed with having oatmeal everyday is that I tend to drink more water. I can now finish 1.2 liters of water while I am in the office and I do not get hungry easily.

So things went fine. But when I got to school, I hurriedly looked for a CR. I need to poopee... The effects of oatmeal "diet".

of work, of headache, of dieting

it has been a toxic week for me.

there were meetings as in daily meetings of different concerns. some are relevant to my KRAs and some are not but still my presence was needed.

i have never done the 700 calories daily intake. it was better planned than done. but still i never exceeded my original plan of 2000 daily calories.

what did was, i packed my sandwiches for lunch and early dinner, my cans of juices, and fruits. mind you, no coffee... but on the third day, there went my migraine. ^$&%^%

i am a coffee addict. it perks up my blood to send signal to my neurons to make my brain functional.

what should i try this week?

who want to go on walking on sunday?

after digging in my piles of DVD, i found my copy of certain DVDs on exercises. but lazy lazy me....

let me listen to you

Sorry but I can't. I am having difficulty hearing since last Tuesday and it got worse. I asked my doctor to refer me to an EENT in the hospital where she's connected. I hope things will be better by tomorrow. This is getting painful. I took a pain reliever and an antibiotic to subside everything.

Depression as a Motivation

Strange? Perhaps. But it is happening to me now.

My youngest sister starts with her new hobby, scrapbooking. So she got all the picture albums ans started to dig to all those pictures. Then she showed to me my past pictures. If I am not mistaken, those pictures were taken four or three years ago. I was not that big. And depression started to sink in.

I got depressed because I pity myself for getting this big. I can't wear clothes I like. I can;t find the perfect fit shoes. I am embarrass to ride in jeepneys because the usual for for 6 people become good for 5 because I occupy to much space. Some kids are teasing me when I pass by in front of them and calling me names.

But I realized, why I should be sad about it. I should take it as a challenge. I want to go back to that body size. So I dug the meal plan my girl friend asked her girl friend dietitian to do for me. I would complement that to my walking every day.

I have been walking but rarely I reach my target 10,000 steps a day. And I have been good lately in drinking milk. I am trying to drink milk not only to help me with my diet also to help my aging bones.

The meal plan illustrates the food I have to consume in a day. And following that as a guide, I am making my meal plan for a week. Logging food I consume is another way to help me in my weight loss. I am consulting a nutritionist at the of February.

To help me with my blogging, I am looking for a web tool to show my progress in everything I do to lose weight. - my daily steps, calories intake and others.

So if you know any tool, please let me know.

Is South Beach Diet Good for Me?

South Beach Diet, or SBD as others call it, has been in the papers as many Filipino socialites and celebrities tried it and really amazed with the results.

So I tried to search for it. Last time I read about it, the dishes in the menu are really Westernized. Though the dishes are American-based, resourceful Filipino chefs made various South Beach recipes that are really Pinoy. There are several catering establishments that are preparing set meals and delivered to the houses of their customers. There are restaurants too serving South Beach Diet dishes.

So now that these establishments are around, dishes are no longer an issue. But now I am bothered with the price. Can I handle it? A meal set meaning per day costs something like over a thousand bucks. And i cannot really afford that. How I wish I can get a copy of the localized South Beach diet and prepare my own set of meals.

If it can be imagined, then it can be done!

Nope not that three two-digit numbers that everybody is waiting for!

I weighed in early this morning. I cannot believe what I saw in the scale. Last week, I weighed in and my scale tipped to 240 lbs. This morning, I weighed in again to check on my progress, I saw 232 lbs. WHOA! That is 8 lbs!

I couldn't believe it so I ask my friend to weigh in and check if our weighing scale is malfunctioning. He said it's just fine. So it means I really lost 8 lbs this week. Is it healthy?

Anyway, the following are the number of steps I made for the dates indicated:
February 2 - 11073 steps

February 1 - 7339 steps
January 31 - 8018 steps
January 30 - 8710 steps
January 29 - 7640 steps
January 28 - 7272 steps
January 27 - 0 (this is a Sunday, and I forgot to bring my Pedo Dido with me)

I am happy! I am happy! I am happy!

I remembered what my professor said today: "If it can be imagined, then it can be done!" She said she read the sentence from a billboard in HongKong a long time ago when she went there as a visiting professor.

So I imagine myself to be fit and healthy. Then it can be done!

Pedometers Promote Weight Loss without Dieting

Yes, you read it right. As stated in an article published in this link: http://walking.about.com/od/pedometer1/a/pedometer1-08.htm, pedometer promotes weight loss. I guess because of the consistent walking to target 10,000 steps a day to burn 1,000 calories. So imagine the number of calories burned because of walking. Read the rest of the feature:

Pedometers Promote Weight Loss without Dieting
Can wearing a pedometer really help you lose weight without dieting? A review of previous pedometer research studies in the January/February 2008 issue of Annals of Family Medicine says yes. People who used a pedometer logged between one to two miles of extra steps per day and lost weight, even without dieting.

Pedometers Lead to Slow But Consistent Weight Loss

The weight loss seen in the nine studies was small but consistent. At only a tenth of a pound a week, on average, it may seem insignificant. But over a year, it can add up to five pounds lost without dieting. The longer the study, the more weight the participants lost.
While this study compiled several very small studies, this is not the first study to show this effect. It builds the body of evidence that pedometers are an excellent tool to increase activity and lose weight, even without dieting.

Pedometers Work to Improve Health

Researcher Dr. Caroline R. Richardson of the University of Michigan Health System said in a press release, "The increase in physical activity can be expected to result in health benefits that are independent of weight loss. Increasing physical activity reduces the risk of cardiovascular problems, lowers blood pressure and helps dieters maintain lean muscle tissue when they are dieting."

on calorie counting

when i tried to lose weight last 2000 or 2001, i was successful to lose 30 lbs in three months. No diet pills or herbal tea. What did i do?

I walked and counted my calories intake. Every day, I walk on my way home. I did care about the number of steps or how short or how long I walked.

So i am trying it again.

my pedo dido reads 8,508 steps within 15:17 hours. This is equal to 3,992 aerobic steps done in 42 minutes. I burned 507 calories or 29.6 grams
